WARNING! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
My parents selected America's Best Movers in San Jose, CA to move them from San Jose to Southern California. They moved from a small, one bedroom unit in an assisted living facility (no kitchen or dining room items to be moved)meaning they had minimal furniture, clothing and personal items to be moved. My parents obtained 3 quotes from different companies and picked what they thought was a reputable company who would do a good job for a fair price. How wrong they were!
My parents are elderly and disabled, and they needed to be sure they could have next day delivery as they couldn't be without their furniture and other items. They told the movers this and were promised next day delivery if they paid an extra fee of $500 which they were told would guarantee them delivery by the next day. They were given a quote for the rest of the fee, based on someone coming out and looking at what they had to move and estimating the weight and time it would take to pack everything. They signed the contract and arranged for the movers to come on a Friday morning to pack and load everything.
The movers showed up Friday morning around 10am and were there until 5:30pm! This for one bed, one dresser, one desk, one table, two chairs and one couch, and clothing for two people and some pictures and books. Even with the long amount of time they were there, they would have left behind my parents bathroom items (towels, toothpaste, shampoo, etc) if I hadn't pointed out to them that they had completely overlooked packing up the bathroom before they left. They gave my parents some paperwork and told us delivery would be the next day (Saturday). They did say that they would have to weigh everything and would notify us if the weight was more than they estimated.
My sister and I were driving my parents down the next day, and I called the movers to get an update on when we could expect delivery. It was then that they changed their story, and said that the delivery wouldn't be until the following day, which was Sunday. They said they had tried to reach us to tell us what the final weight was, and said that they couldn't send the truck out until we had approved it. I told them that no one had ever told us this any of the times we had spoken to them, and I was told that I had to be lying, because all their staff knew this. They were all extremely rude and would constantly change their story and one person would contradict what another had told us.
When I said that we would then expect a refund of the $500 charge for next day delivery, since this wasn't going to occur, and the staff became extremely rude and said that they would under no circumstances refund the $500 charge, and then said that the $500 was only to dedicate a truck to my parents load, not to guarantee next day delivery. When I then asked why, if the truck was dedicated to my parents, they couldn't send it Saturday, since I had already approved the weight, they said they had sent the truck on another job. When I pointed out that this meant they hadn't in fact, dedicated the truck to my parents job, they told me I could take it or leave it.
The bottom line was that they held us hostage. They said that if we insisted on a refund of the $500 next day delivery charge, they would delay the delivery for another 7-10 days. They said we could take it or leave it, and that if we wanted the delivery to be Sunday, we had to pay what they wanted.
As if that wasn't bad enough, after we agreed to pay the $500 to get the delivery, they showed up about 6 hours later than they promised us. They promised a noon delivery on Sunday at first, then it became between 12-2, then between 2-4, then between 4-6. They told me the driver had left, when it turns out later, he was still in San Jose. They lied and misrepresented themselves all throughout the process.
When they arrived, they informed us that the weight was actually almost double what they had estimated, and charged an extra $1,700. There is absolutely no way that the items my parents had moved weighed as much as they said.
I would never wish this experience on anyone else and will be contacting the Public Utilities Commission to file a complaint and will be contacting any other regulatory and consumer organization I can find to get the word out about these people. They are unethical, unprofessional and completely out of line with how they run their business.
